The cheap dvd thread brought up the issue of HDCP support on current graphics cards a couple days ago. If you didn’t know, HDCP is a way to encrypt video encryption on the hardware level in order to help copy protect the new blu-ray dvds. Well since the initial discovery that virtually all graphics cards being manufactured and sold while claiming to support HDCP things have started to heat up. It looks like the graphics cards manufacturers could be facing some rough times ahead. On top of this the introduction of blu-ray may now face some trouble. I’m guessing that not too many people will want to plop down anywhere from $150-$400 for a new graphics card for what amounts to a somewhat unnecessary increase in resolution.
Firing Squad was one of the first to blow the cover on this fiasco.

Daily Tech shows some good proof that at least ATI realizes this is going to be bad.

And perhaps the most enlightening is Ars Technica who look at this all a bit more philisophically.
